| physical property | a characteristic that can be observed without changing the substance |
| physical change | a change that does not change the composition of the substance |
| mixture | two or more substances combine without making a new substance |
| heterogeneous | mixture that is different throughout, think of trail mix or a salad |
| homogeneous | mixture that is the same throughout, think of milk, plain chocolate ice cream |
| solution | a mixture where one substance dissolves evenly into another |
| solute | the substance that dissolves |
| solvent | the substance in which the solute dissolves |
| insoluble | matter that does not dissolve a solvent |
| chemical change | a change that changes the composition of a substance |
| pure substance | substance made of only one component, such as an element |
| non-pure | substance that is made of more than one component, such as a mixture |
