States of Matter
This set reviews states of matter and phase changes
Term | Definition |
---|---|
particles | tiny pieces of matter that make up an object |
solid | matter in which particles are tightly packed together, have a definite shape and size, very little energy |
liquid | matter in which particles are more spread out than in solids, take the shape of their container and have a definite size, more energy than solids |
gas | matter in which particles are spaced very far apart, do not have a definite shape or a definite size, highest energy level |
plasma | matter not common on earth, particles are very far apart, move freely and rapidly, have high energy levels, are charged and found in lightning |
melting | phase change when solid particles gain enough energy to slide past one another and become liquid particles |
vaporization | phase change when liquid particles gain energy and become a gas |
phase change | process of changing from one state of matter to another |
heat | form of energy that refers to the motion of particles |
freezing | phase change from a liquid to a solid, removes energy |
condensation | phase change from a gas to a liquid, removes energy |
sublimation | phase change directly from a solid to a gas |
