| ANTITUSSIVE | drug that can decrease the coughing reflex of the CNS |
| ASTHMA | condition in which marrowing of the airways impedes breathing |
| CHRONIC OBSTRUCTIVE PULMONARY DISEASE(COPD) | disease process in which the lungs have decreased the ability for gas exchange; also known as emphysema and chronic bronchitis |
| CYSTIC FIBROSIS | inherited disorder that causes production of very thick mucus in the respiratory tract and affects the pancreas and sweat glands; patient experiences difficulty in breathing and has frequent respiratory infections |
| DECONGESTANTS | drugs that reduce swelling of the mucous membranes by constricting dilated blood vessels; they reduce blood flow to nasal tissues. reducing nasal congestion |
| EXPECTORANT | chemical that causes the removal of mucous secretions from the respiratory system and loosens and thins sputum and bronchial secretions for ease of expectoration |
