Chapter 20

QuestionAnswer
continuous phase an unbroken phase that makes up most of a heterogeneous mixture in which other phases are dispersed
dispersed phase a phase that is a minority in a heterogenous mixture and that is dispersed or suspended throughout the continuous phase
gel a two-phase heterogeneous mixture in which dispersed solid particles form an open network throughout a liquid continuous phase, giving some rigidity to the mixture
foam a heterogeneous mixture in which a gaseous phase consisting of tiny bubbles is dispersed in a liquid or solid
aerosol a heterogeneous mixture consistin of tiny solid particles or liquid drops in a gas
solution a homogeneous mixture of two or more pure substances
solute the substance dissolved in the solvent in a solution; the minority component in a solution
solvent the substance that does the dissolving in a solution; the majority component of a solution
Tyndall effect the scattering of light off dispersed or suspended particles in a heterogeneous fluid mixture
soluble anle to dissolve in a certain solvent
miscible soluble in another liquid;used of liquids
solubility the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolve in a given amount of a prticular solvent at a specified temerature
insoluble unable to dissolve in a certain solvent
Henry's law law stating that the greater the pressure of a gas on a liquid, the greater the mass of the gas that can dissolve in the liquid at a given temperature
saturated discribes a solution in which the solure's concentration is at its solubility limit.
insaturated describes a solution in which the solute concentration is below its solubility limit.
supersaturated describes a solution in which the solure concentraion exceeds its nowmal solubility limit under existing conditions, a highly unstable condidtion that can result in rapid precipitation of the solute

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
