| Hyperbole | extreme exaggeration |
| Metaphor | compares two unlike things by saying one IS the other |
| Simile | compares two unlike things using like or as |
| Personification | when animals or inanimate objects are given human qualities or characteristics |
| Onomatopoeia | words that represent sounds |
| Alliteration | repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words close to each other |
| Foreshadowing | when the author hints at upcoming events without directly stating that they will happen |
