protagonist the main character in a work
soliloquy a speech, usually lengthy, in which a character, alone on stage, expresses his or her thoughts aloud; a monologue
antagonist a character who opposes the protagonist
verse and prose a type of writing which may use rhyme and other technical devices often associated with poetry a type of writing that uses units like sentences and paragraphs
Elizabethan Era a period of time associated with the reign of English Queen Elizabeth I (1558-1603) and is often to be considered a golden age in English history and theatre
couplet a stanza consisting of two successive lines of verse, usually rhymed
English Renaissance [renaissance] meaning "rebirth", this term used to describe a cultural and artistic movement in England in the early 16th century to the early 17th century
Globe Theatre built in 1599 in Southwark, England it was not only one of the most famous playhouses of all time, but also the playhouse where Shakespeare perfomed many of his great plays
seating seating in the theatre was determined by wealth and social status each person paid a penny for admission for an additional fee, one could sit in one of the galleries protected from the elements
actors women were not allowed to participate in plays due to the theatre's atmosphere the female characters were often acted by young boys besides being able to act, Elizabethan actors were also expected to be able to sing, dance, clown, and fence
slogan above the Globe Theatre's main entrance were the words, "The whole world is a Playhouse"
Shakespeare's birth nobody knows Shakespeare's true date of birth it is believed that he was born on April 26th, 1564 in Stratford-upon-Avon, England
Shakespeare's death Shakespeare died in 1616 at the age of 52
Shakespeare's education although Shakespeare is one of literature's greatest figures, he never attended college
Shakespeare's acting aside from writing plays and composing 154 sonnets, Shakespeare was also an actor who performed many of his own plays as well as those of other playwrights
Shakespeare's family Shakespeare named a woman named Anne Hataway she was 26 years old when Shakespeare married her at 18 together, they had 3 children
Shakespeare's printed works Shakespeare never actually published any of his plays after his death, two of his fellow actors recorded his work published 36 of his plays in 1623
