imipramine Action blocks reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin at presynaptic nerve endings, increases action of both neurotransmitters, use in enuresis may be d/t fact that blocks acetylcholine receptors -- enuresis is involuntary urination
imipramine Uses : Depression, Management of Enuresis in Children and Adolescents - use in depression poses a challenge d/t unpredictable responses
imipramine Adverse effects Sedation, Orthostatic hypotension, Cardiac Dysrhythmias, Anticholinergic symptoms (Dry mouth, Sedation, Confusion), TCA OD, Clearly defined withdrawal symptoms
imipramine Contraindications Immediate Post-Acute MI - Use in caution with patients who have preexisting cardiovascular dx
imipramine RN Considerations NO St. John's Wort, NO alcohol or grapefruit juice, this med may inhibit metabolism of other drugs, use of this med and MAOIs concurrently can have serious effects, Assess for Suicidal thoughts or plans, adverse effects on heart- EKG
