AKS 6 Solutions TEST

solutions, acids, bases, concentration, conductivity

QuestionAnswer
What is a solution? a homogeneous mixture of two or more substances
How does the concentration of a solution change? The concentration of a solution can change if volume or the solute changes, ie. concentration increases if volume decreases or concentration decreases if volume increase
Why is pure water not a conductor of electricity? Pure water has no available ions; until a solute is dissolved in the water, no ions are produced
What factors affect the dissolving rate? surface area (cubed vs. crushed) temperature stirring (agitation)
What is solubility? The amount of solute that can dissolve in a given amount of solvent at a given temperature
How is the solubility of solids different from the solubility of gases? The solubility of solids increases at higher temperatures; the solubility of gases increases at lower temperatures (decreases at higher temperatures)
What determines the solubility of solution on a solubility curve? The point of saturation
Distinguish between saturated, unsaturated and supersaturated. Saturated=cannot dissolve more "ENOUGH" (on the line of solubility curve graph) Unsaturated=can dissolve more "NOT ENOUGH" (under the line) Supersaturated =too much has been dissolved "MORE THAN ENOUGH" (above the line)
Which factor directly affects the solubility of solids and gases? Temperature
How does a solubility curve look for an increase in solubility with an increase in temperature of a solution? A positive slope for solids and liquids (gases have a negative slope)
What are the properties of an acid? positive ions (H+) called hydronium , conducts electricity, reacts with metals, sour taste, pH<7
What are the properties of a base? negative ions (OH-) called hydroxide, conducts electricity, does not react with metals, bitter taste & slippery, pH >7
What is the result of an acid reacting with base? A neutral product, pH=7; the H+ ions from the acid and OH- ions from the base create a neutralized reaction
Which substance will cause litmus paper to turn red? Acids

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
