Wave Words

Vocabulary of Wave Terminology

QuestionAnswer
Transverse Wave A wave in which medium travels perpendicular to wave direction
Compressional/Longitudinal Wave A wave in which medium travels parallel to wave direction
crest The highest point on a transverse wave
Trough the lowest point on a transverse wave
compression The region on a compressional wave where molecules are most dense
rarefaction the region on a compressional wave where molecules are least dense
wavelength the distance from one point on a wave to the next identical point (ie crest to crest)
amplitude the height of a wave
frequency the number of wave cycles that pass each second - measured in hertz (Hz)
Period the amount of time it takes one wave to pass - calculated by 1/frequency
medium the material/matter that a wave passes through
wave cycle one complete wave
wave train several wave cycles one after another
wave velocity speed of a wave - calculated by distance/time or wavelength x frequency.
