Wave Words
Vocabulary of Wave Terminology
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Transverse Wave | A wave in which medium travels perpendicular to wave direction |
| Compressional/Longitudinal Wave | A wave in which medium travels parallel to wave direction |
| crest | The highest point on a transverse wave |
| Trough | the lowest point on a transverse wave |
| compression | The region on a compressional wave where molecules are most dense |
| rarefaction | the region on a compressional wave where molecules are least dense |
| wavelength | the distance from one point on a wave to the next identical point (ie crest to crest) |
| amplitude | the height of a wave |
| frequency | the number of wave cycles that pass each second - measured in hertz (Hz) |
| Period | the amount of time it takes one wave to pass - calculated by 1/frequency |
| medium | the material/matter that a wave passes through |
| wave cycle | one complete wave |
| wave train | several wave cycles one after another |
| wave velocity | speed of a wave - calculated by distance/time or wavelength x frequency. |
