The Human Ear/Sound

This is the Human Ear and Sound for 6th Graders. It is basic vocabulary!

TermDefinition
Auditory Nerve The Nerve That Carries Sensory Information for sound and balance from the ear to the brain
Cochlea A spiral tube of the inner ear that looks like a snail shell and contains the nerve ending necessary for hearing
Anvil One of the 3 small bones in the middle ear, also called the Incus
Inner Ear The Innermost part of the ear consisting of the cochlea and semicircular canals. It transmits sound vibrations to the brain and is the organ of balance
Hammer The largest and outermost of the 3 small bones. Also called the Malleus.
Middle Ear The Part of the ear that contains the eardrum and 3 small bones.
Outer Ear The part of the ear that gathers incoming sound waves.
Semicircular Canals 3 looped tubes in the inner ear that maintain balance
Stirrup The innermost of the 3 small bones. Also called the Stapes
Absorbed A sound Wave disappears into a surface.
Decible The unit used to measure how loud or soft a sound is
Echolocation The finding of an object using reflected sound
Hertz The unit used to measure frequency
Loudness measures how well a sound can be heard
Medium a substance through which a wave travels
Pitch A measure of how loud a sound is perceived to be
Reflection The bouncing of sound on a surface
Sound created by vibrating molecules through a medium
Sound Wave longitudinal waves that are caused by vibrations and travel through a medium
Vibration The complete back and forth movement of an object
