Opioid (Narcotic analgesic): Morphine, Hydrocodone, Oxycontin, Percocet Action: interacts with specific receptors Use: analgesia and anesthesiaSE: resp. depression, sedation, nausea, vomiting
Talwan: Stimulate opioid receptor, thus causing analgesia. Withdrawl sympt.and Side effects: not as intense as opioid agonist.
Central Acting Agents: Tramadol (Ultram) Has weak opioid activity. Centrally acting analgesic. Side effects include: CNS, GI, CV, and derm. effects.
Methadone maintenance: Does not cure but avoids withdrawl symptoms of opioid dependence. Oral form.
