QuestionAnswer
NSAIDS are used for: Mild to moderate inflammation. Pain and Fever. (Analgesics & Antipyretics) When combined with warfarin it promotes bleeding.
NSAIDS are: Non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs.
NSAIDS include: Asprin, Ibuprofen, Cox 2 Inhibitors (Celebrex)
Cox 1: Present in all tissues. Reduces gastric acid secretion. Promotes renal blood flow and platelet aggregation.
Cox 2: Present at sites of injury. Promotes inflammation. Sensitizes pain receptors and mediates fever in the brain.
Asprin: ASA Ihhibits Cox 1 and Cox 2.AE: Irritate digestive system. May cause bleeding. Salicylism may occur (tinnitus, dizziness, headache, excessive perspiration) DO NOT GIVE TO CHILDREN!
Ibuprofen: Inhubits Cox 1 and Cox 2. Common side effects: Nausea and Vomiting. Easier on the system than asprin.
Cox 2 Inhibitors: Treatment of choice for moderate to severe inflammation. Newest and most controversial class. No inhibiton of Cox 1. Do not affect blood coagulation. Do not irritate digestive system.
Systemic Glucocorticoids: Assess for infection, monitor pt for serum glucose levels (steroids may increase glucose level) Body weight, BP, CBC, Electrolytes.
Antipyretics: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Contaraindicated in pts with liver disease, inhibits warfarin metabolism. May result in bleeding.
Ibuprofen (Advil,Motrin): The action is to inhibit prostoglandin synthesis. The primary use is for musculoskeletal disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Mild to moderate pain. Reduction of fever and primary dysmenorrheal pain.
Systemic Glucocorticoid: Drug: Prednisone (Meticorten) Action: Being metabolized to an active form of glucocorticoid.Primary use: treat inflammationLong term therapy may result in cushing syndrome.
Antipyretics: Acetaminophen (Tylenol) Reduces fever by direct action of hypothalamus and dialation of pheripherial blood vessels. (Enables sweating) Primary use: relieve pain and reduce fever, no antiinflammatory action. AE: possible liver damage, no blood coag.
