Therapeutic Classes

Bacteriostatic Allows the body's natural mechanisms to have time to destroy the microorganisms by inhibiting bacterial growth
Bactericidal Kills the microorganisms
Antibacterials Unlike antibiotics - are not synthesized from microorganisms, usually bacteriostatic, but some are considered bactericidal
Urinary Anti-infectives Concentrated in the urine and are used for urinary tract infections (UTI's)
Antibiotics Synthesized by microorganisms - grown, can be bactriostatic or bactricidal (Penicillins, Cephalosporins)
Antifungals To treat topical and systemic fungal infections
Antiparasitic agents To treat parasitic infections
Antihelminthics Worm Infections
Amebicides Amoeba Infections
Antitubercular Agents To treat tuberculosis - combination therapy wuth several agents is usually required to avoid resistance, purified protien derivative is an agent used to detect tubercular infections
Antiviral Agents To treat viral infections - Antivirals for the herpes virus, HIV and AIDS
