Basic Electrical Terms

TermDefinition
Current A flow of charged particles
Resistance Anything that slows the current
Voltage The potential difference in a circuit
Volt Unit of measure for how much "push" is behind a charge
Charge Electrical activity
Neutral No electrical activity
Ampere Unit of measure for current
Ohm Unit of measure of resistance
Circuit A closed path for a charge to follow
Open circuit A circuit without a continuous conductive path
Closed circuit A complete circuit with a continuous conductive path
Short circuit A circuit where current is not resisted by anything
Static electricity A buildup of charged particles
Electron Electrically active subatomic particle with a negative charge
Proton Electrically active subatomic particle with a positive charge
