insomnia person experiences impaired daytime functioning due to a difficulty falling asleep (DFA), difficulty maintaining sleep (DMS), or poor quality sleep
medications approved to treat insomnia benzodiazepines, non-benzodiazepines hypnotics, melatonin receptor agonists, dual orexin receptor antagonist, antihistamines and certain antidepressants
Special Note for elderly pharmacists do not recommend OTC sleep products containing diphenhydramine (i.e. Tylenol PM) because they may cause confusion and increase risk for falls
