memory the process by which we encode, store, and retrieve info
sensory memory refers to the initial, momentary store of info very briefly
short-term memory holds information for 15-25 seconds and stores it according to its meaning
long-term memory info stored on a relatively permanent basis, although may be difficult to retrieve
chunks a group of separate pieces of info stored as a single unit in short-term memory
rehearsal the repetition of info that has entered short term memory
declarative memory memory for factual info: names, faces, dates, etc.
procedural memory memory for skills and habits such as riding a bike
semantic memory memory for general knowledge and facts about the world, as well as memory for the rules of logic that are used to deduce other facts
episodic memory memory for events that occur in a particular time, place, or context
explicit memory intentional or conscious recollection of info
implicit memory memories of which people are not consciously aware, but can affect performance and behavior
flashbulb memories memories centered on a specific, important, or surprising event that are vivid like a snapshot
constructive processes memories are influenced by the meaning we give to events
schemas organized bias of info stored in memory that bias the way new info is interpreted, stored, and recalled; sets of cognitions about people and social experiences
autobiographical memories our recollection of circumstances and episode from our own lives, encompass memories we hold about ourselves
retroactive interference difficulty to recall info learned earlier because of its exposure to new material
proactive interference info learned earlier disrupts the recall of newer info
interference info in memory disrupts the recall of other info
