| Hyperbole | extreme exaggeration (He’s running faster than the wind). |
| Idiom | A common, often used expression that doesn’t make sense if you take it literally (ex. Kill two birds with one stone). |
| Oxymoron | conjoining contradictory terms (ex. Jumbo shrimp). |
| Irony | Words used in such a way that their intended meaning is different is different from the actual meaning of the words (ex. A vehicle was parked right in front of the no-parking sign). |
| Pun | a “play on words” based on the multiple meanings of a single word or on words that sound alike but mean different things (ex. I was struggling to figure out how lightning works, but then it struck me.) |
| Adjective | a word that describes a noun (often a word that illustrates appearance or size, or positive or negative personality traits). |
| Adverb | a word that modifies a verb, adjective, or another adverb (it tells us how, when, where, how much, and which what frequency). |
| Clause | A group of words containing a subject and a predicate. |
| Conjunction | a word that joins two sentences together or two words together. |
| Homophone | two words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings (bye and buy; see and sea). |
