7 Principles

7 Principles of the Constitution

TermDefinition
Popular Sovereignty The power to govern comes from the people.
Republicanism The people elect representatives to make laws and conduct government.
Federalism Power is shared between the national and state governments.
Individual Rights Personal liberties and freedoms that people are naturally born with. (unalienable rights)
Separation of Powers The power of the government is divided into 3 branches
Checks and Balances Each of the three branches can make sure government is run fairly by making sure one does not become too powerful.
Limited Government The government only interferes within the lives of citizens when necessary and has powers restricted by the Constitution
Congress makes laws for the nation Separation of Powers
The people elect representatives to make laws and conduct government Republicanism

The President and all other government officials must obey the law like all American citizens. Limited Government
The Supreme Court declares laws unconstitutional Separation of Powers
Congress cannot make laws that violate freedom of speech Individual Rights

The Senate can refuse to approve a treaty that the President has negotiated. Checks and Balances
The President can veto a bill that has been approved by the House of Representatives and the Senate. Checks and Balances
