Solutions-Chapter 21

QuestionAnswer
What is a solute? The substance being dissolved in a solution.
What is a solvent? The substance present in a larger quantity that dissolves the solute.
What are some ways to speed up the dissolving of a solid? Increasing the temperature, stir the solution, or increasing the surface area.
What is the difference between concentration and solubility? Concentration is the amount of solute dissolved in a given amount of solvent, while solubility is the maximum amount of solvent that can be dissolved at a given temperature.
What is a saturated solution? A solution that holds all the solute it can at a certain temperature.
What is an unsaturated solution? Any solution that can dissolve more solute at a given temperature.
What can a polar solution dissolve? A polar solvent
What are electrolytes? Compounds that will form solutions with ions and solutions that can conduct electricity.
The process in which molecular compounds dissolve in water and form charged particles is called ___________. Ionization
In what type of solution will crystals form? A supersaturated solution.
What are the effects of adding more solute to a solution? It can raise the boiling point and decrease the freezing point.
What is an alloy? A mixture of elements with metallic properties. (bronze, steel, brass, etc.)
What are some ways to make a gas dissolve more quickly in a liquid? Decreasing the temperature of a solution, increasing pressure, not stirring it.
What's it called when there is a small amount of solvent in a large amount of solute. Dilute
What is a non-electrolyte? A substance that forms no ions in water and doesn't conduct electricity.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
