Magnetism Vocabulary

| magnetic force | the attraction or repulsion force produced when magnetic poles interact |
| magnetic field | the region around a magnet where the magnetic force is exerted |
| Magnetic field lines | a visual tool used to represent magnetic fields |
| temporary magnet | a magnet made from a material that easily loses its magnetism |
| permanent magnet | a magnet made of material that keeps its magnetism for a long time |
| compass | a device with a magnified needle that can spin freely |
| attract | to pull to or draw toward oneself or itself |
| repel | to push back or away by a force, as one body acting upon another |
| magnetic domain | a grouping of atoms that have their magnetic fields lined up in the same direction |
| Magnetism | a magnetic force |
| electromagnet | a magnet created by wrapping a current-carrying wire around a ferromagnetic core |
| ferromagnetic element | includes iron, nickel, and cobalt- elements that have an especially strong attraction to magnets |
