Magnetism Vocabulary

magnet any material that attracts iron and materials that contain iron
magnetic force the attraction or repulsion force produced when magnetic poles interact
magnetic field the region around a magnet where the magnetic force is exerted
Magnetic field lines a visual tool used to represent magnetic fields
temporary magnet a magnet made from a material that easily loses its magnetism
permanent magnet a magnet made of material that keeps its magnetism for a long time
compass a device with a magnified needle that can spin freely
attract to pull to or draw toward oneself or itself
repel to push back or away by a force, as one body acting upon another
magnetic domain a grouping of atoms that have their magnetic fields lined up in the same direction

electromagnet a magnet created by wrapping a current-carrying wire around a ferromagnetic core
ferromagnetic element includes iron, nickel, and cobalt- elements that have an especially strong attraction to magnets
