TermDefinition
Personification the giving of human qualities to an animal, object, or idea (ex. The trees danced in the wind).
Hyperbole extreme exaggeration (ex. He's running faster than the wind).
Simile A comparison using "like" or "as" (ex. my sister is as fast as a fish in the pool).
Metaphor A comparison without using like or as (ex. my sister is a fish in the pool).
Idiom A common, often used expression that doesn't make sense if you take it literally (ex. Kill two birds with one stone).
Alliteration Repetition of initial consonant sounds (ex. She sells seashells by the sea shore).
Oxymoron conjoining contradictory terms (ex. deafening silence)
Irony Words used in such a way that their intended meaning is different from the actual meaning of the words (ex. A vehicle was parked right in front of the no-parking sign).
Onomatopoeia A word that imitates the sound it represents (ex. Bam!)
Pun a "play on words" based on the multiple meanings of a single word or on words that sound alike but mean different things (ex. I was struggling to figure out how lightning works, but then it struck me).
