Vocabulary from Ch. 4: Solutions

| solution | a type of mixture, called a homogeneous mixture, that is the same throughout. |
| solute | a substance that is dissolved in a solution. |
| solvent | a substance that dissolves a solute. |
| suspension | a mixture in which the particles are larger than those found in a solution. |
| concentration | a measure of the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent at a particular temperature. |
| dilute | a solution that has a low concentration of solute. |
| saturated | a solution that contains the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved in the solvent at a given temperature. |
| solubility | the amount of a substance that will dissolve in a certain amount of solvent at a given temperature to produce a saturated solution. |
| acid | a substance that can donate a hydrogen ion to another substance. |
| base | a substance that can accept a hydrogen ion from another substance. |
| pH | the concentration of hydrogen ions in a solution; a measurement of acidity. |
| neutral | a substance that is neither an acid nor a base, with a pH of 7. |
| alloy | a mixture of a metal and one or more other elements, usually metals as well. |
