Understanding the four main types of conflict in literature
| Term | Definition |

| Man vs. Man | A conflict that involves a character against another character |
| Man vs. Circumstances | A conflict in which the character of the story battles his/her own problems and issues in life |
| Man vs. Society | A conflict in which the character of the story battles with the rules, customs, traditions and practices |
| Man vs. Himself | A conflict in which the character struggles with self-perception, sometimes voices and "inner demons". |
| Internal Conflict | Conflict and or struggles that take place within |
| External Conflict | Conflict and or struggles that take place physically. It is what we can see |
