| precipitate | a solid product that may form when chemicals in two liquids react. |
| catalyst | a substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction |
| law of conservation of mass | states that in a chemical reaction atoms are neither created nor destroyed. |
| coefficients | numbers used to indicate how many molecules take part in the reaction. |
| bond energy | the energy associated with chemical bonds |
| exothermic reaction | a reaction in which energy is released |
| endothermic reaction | a reaction in which energy is absorbed |
| photosynthesis | an endothermic reaction in which plants absorb energy from the sun to turn carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose. |
| respiration | a process in which living cells obtain energy from glucose molecules; also called the "combustion" of glucose. |
