Central Nervous System Depressants and Muscle Relaxants

Drugs that have an inhibitory effect on the CNS to the degree that they reduce nervousness, excitability, irritability Sedatives
Cause sleep, much more potent effect on CNS than sedatives; can become a hypnotic if it is given in large enough doses, can reset the body clock if given too much hypnotics
What 3 main groups are sedatives classified into Barbiturates, Benzodiazepines, Miscellaneous drugs
Most commonly prescribed sedative-hypnotic drug, GABA, REM, Benzodiazepines
First introduced in 1903 and were the standard drugs for insomnia and sedation , habit forming, low therapeutic index(narrow dosage range) Barbiturates
Over the counter hypnotics doxylamine (Unisom), diphenhydramine (Sominex), acetaminophen/diphenhydramine (extra strength Tylenol PM)
