Vocabulary from Ch. 1: Atomic Structure and the Periodic Table
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| proton | a positively charged particle |
| neutron | an uncharged particle |
| nucleus | the combination of protons and neutrons in the center of the atom |
| electrons | negatively charged particles that move around the outside of the nucleus |
| atomic number | determines the identity of an atom; also the number of protons in the nucleus |
| atomic mass number | the total number of protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus |
| isotopes | atoms of the same element that have a different number of neutrons |
| ion | formed when an atom gains or loses one or more electrons |
| atomic mass | the average mass of all the element's isotopes; also called the atomic mass number |
| periodic table | a table of the elements, arranged by atomic number, that shows the patterns in their properties. |
| group | the elements in a column on the periodic table |
| period | the elements in a row on the periodic table |
| reactive | indicates how likely an element is to undergo a chemical change |
| metals | elements that conduct electricity and heat well and have a shiny appearance |
| nonmetals | the elements on the right side of the periodic table, with properties that are opposite of those of the metals. |
| metalloids | elements that have properties of both metals and nonmetals |
| radioactivity | the process by which atoms produce energy and particles |
| half-life | the amount of time it takes for one-half of the atoms in a particular sample to decay |
