Vocabulary Words and Definitions

onomatopoeia Words that sound like what they represent Examples: meow or splash
grit Small loose particles of stone or sand
conserve To save or protect something Example: People are encouraged to save energy by turning off lights.
ascent The act of rising or climbing upward Example: The hikers began their ascent of the mountain.
descent The act of coming or going down Example: The plane began its descent.
gouged (verb) Cut with, or as if with something sharp
personification The act of giving human characteristics to nonhuman or inanimate things Example: The flowers danced in the wind.
simile Comparison of two unlike things using words such as like or as Example: He is fast like a cheetah.
metaphor Comparison of two unlike things without using the words like or as Example: She is an angel.
fragile (adjective) Easily damaged Synonym: delicate
Bonus: Sequence words pertaining to time First, Next, Second, Later, After that, Before that, At the same time, While, Soon, At last, Finally, In the end
