| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| speed | the distance an object travels per unit of time |
| velocity | speed in a given direction |
| acceleration | the rate at which velocity changes |
| Newton's first law of inertia | an object at rest or in motion will stay at rest or in motion unless acted upon by an outside force |
| Newton's second law | an object's acceleration depends on its mass and on the net force acting on it |
| Newton's third law | for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction |
| work | force exerted on an object that causes it to move |
| force | a push or pull exerted on an object |
| mechanical advantage | the number of times a machine increases the force exerted on it |
| efficiency | the percentage of input work that is converted to output work |
| power | the rate at which one form of energy is transferred into another |
| mass | a measure of how much matter is in an object |
| weight | a measure of the force of gravity acting on an object |
| friction | the force that two surfaces exert on each other when they rub against each other |
| simple machines | the most basic device for making work easier |
| inclined plane | a simple machine that is a flat, sloped, surface |
| wedge | a simple machine that is an inclined plane that moves |
| screw | a simple machine that is an inclined plane wrapped around a central cylinder to form a spiral |
| lever | a simple machine that consists of a rigid bar that pivots around a fixed point |
| fulcrum | the fixed point around which a lever pivots |
| pulley | a simple machine that consists of a grooved wheel with a rope or cable wrapped around it |
| wheel and axle | a simple machine that consists of two attached circular or cylindrical objects that rotate about a common axis |
| compound machine | a device that combines two or more simple machines |
| speed formula | distance/time |
| force formula | mass x acceleration |
