| foreshadowing | hinting of future events |
| conflict | the struggle or problem within the story |
| external conflict | the conflict outside of the character; from outside source . example ; you have NO control over this conflict |
| external conflict (person vs person) | a conflict between 2 people. example- sports, bets, challenges |
| external conflict (person vs nature) | examples: blizzards, bugs, tornadoes, hurricanes |
| Internal Conflict | The character struggles with a problem inside him or herself; how your heart feels; you are unsure of something |
| Internal Conflict (person vs self) | Uses "I"or "My" |
| Internal Conflict (person vs Society) | example: will people accept me? |
| motivation | It is why a character does something |
| flashback | Looking back at earlier events. |
| symbolism | The use of symbols in a story |
| symbols | objects that represent ideas |
| imagery | A movie in your head; words are used that apply to the 5 senses (seeing, smelling, hearing, tasting, touching) |
| character | A person or animal within a story |
| characterization | The development of character's personalities |
| static character | The character that stays the same {ex: Superman) |
| dynamic character | The character that changes |
| protagonist | The main character who faces and overcomes the conflicts (ex: the good guy) |
| antagonist | The opposing force that the protagonist faces (ex: the bad guy) |
| plot | The sequence of events in the story |
| exposition | the introduction to the story |
| rising action | The build up to the climax |
| climax | The turning point; the highest point in the story |
| falling action | Events that happen after the climax |
| theme | The moral, message or lesson of the story |
| point of view | The angle from which the story is told |
| first person point of view | A character tells the story in a personal way |
| third person point of view | An outside narrator tells the story and knows more than one character's point of view |
| third person omniscient point of view | All knowing; The narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all of the characters in the story |
