Why did explorers come to New York? To find a faster route to Asia.
Who was Samuel de Champlain? Traveled to what is now northern New York. He reached a large lake that he named after himself.
Who was Henry Hudson? Sailed on the half moon into New York bay. He was an Englishman Who sailed for the Netherlands.he sailed up what is now known the Hudson River, names after him
Jobs in New Netherlands They would produce crops and other goods that could trade with the Native Americans for fur
What was New Amsterdam? Dutch colony that was set up to trade with the native Americans, mostly fur. Peter Minuit bought Manhattan and renamed it New Amsterdam for $24 in tools, cloth, metal pots and beads.
How were African slaves used in New Netherlands? The slaves were used to work the fields, load ships and build homes and other buildings. The Dutch West India Company brought the first slaves here.
What was the Culture of New Netherlands Many religions were practiced in the colony. They included French protestant, German Lutheran, Presbyterian, Quaker and Roman Catholic

Trading animal fur was very important in colonial New Netherlands
Patroon system To attract more settlers, in 1629 the company agreed to give a large area of land to anyone who would pay to bring 50 settlers to New Netherlands the landowner was called a patroon

Why did English take over New Netherlands? England was competing with Spain, France, and the Netherlands for control of land in order to expand it’s trade
Reasons Colonists surrendered New Amsterdam knew that they had no chance against the heavily armed English warships. In a addition , there were many more people in the English colonies than the Dutch colony. The English also had more soldiers than the 150 in New Netherlands.
How Charles ll took over New Netherlands
He believed England had the right to the land of New Netherlands based on the voyages of John Cabot. Based on his claim, the king “gave” New Netherlands his brother James, Duke of York

Economy New York traded goods such as lumber and grain with England and other English colonies in North America, West Indies, and Africa. Shipbuilding became important part of New York’s economy
