prediction a logical guess or assumption about something that has not happened yet
communicate to give and receive information
synthesize to form by combining parts or elements into a single or unified piece
topic sentence states the main idea of a paragraph
commentary the writer's statements about the meaning and importance of the details and examples
novel a type of literary text that tells a fictional story
subplot a secondary plot that occurs along with a main plot
introduction the opening part of an essay, which should get the reader's attention and indicate the topic
hook a compelling idea or statement in the introduction, designed to get the reader's attention
thesis statement a sentence in the introduction of an essay that states the writer's position or opinion on the topic of the essay
conclusion one or more paragraphs that bring the essay to a close and leave an impression with the reader
biography an informational text that explains details about a person's life, but is written by someone other than that person
autobiography an informational text that tells the story of a person's life and is written by that person
