| Volume | The size of an object |
| Law of the Conservation of Matter | Scientific law that states that matter cannot be created nor destroyed but can change states |
| Physical Change | A process that does not change the chemical make-up in a substance. Ex. Breaking your pencil |
| Chemical Change | A process that involves a change in the chemical makeup of the substance. After the change, it no longer has the same properties. Ex. Frying an egg |
| Solid | Has a definite size (volume) and shape; particles are packed together tightly and movement is not fast |
| Liquid | Has a definite size (volume) but no definite shape; particles are more active and farther apart than in a solid |
| Gas | Has no definite size or shape; particles are far apart and move very fast |
| Plasma | The basic state of matter on the sun's surface |
| Condensation | A change from a gaseous to a liquid state, caused by a decrease in temperature |
| Evaporation | A change from a liquid to a gaseous state, caused when a liquid is heated to its boiling point |
| Freezing | A change from a liquid to a solid state, caused when a substance reaches the freezing point |
| Melting | A change from a solid to a liquid state, caused by an increase in temperature to the melting point of the substance |
