Holt Chapter 20 Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
wave a disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space
Transverse Wave A wave in which the process of the wave's medium vibrate perpendicular to the direction the wave is traveling.
medium a substance through which a wave can travel
longitudinal wave A wave in which the particles of the medium vibrate back and forth along the path that waves travel.
amplitude the maximum distance a wave vibrates from its rest position
frequency the number of waves produced in a given amount of time
wave length the distance between one point on a wave and the corresponding point on an adjacent wave in a series of waves.
reflection the bending of a wave after it strikes a barrier of an object
refraction the bending of a wave around a barrier or through an opening
diffraction the bending of waves around a barrier or through an opening
absorption the transfer of energy carried by light waves to particles of matter
