REBT changes behavior by helping to replace irrational beliefs
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Rational Emotional Behavior Therapy: | Developed by Albert Ellis, this therapy considers dysfunctional behavior to be a result of common irrational beliefs. |
| How can irrational beliefs be identified? | These beliefs (I must be loved by everyone) often include absolutes such as “should” or “must”, which likely means the person’s desires have turned into unrealistic demands or needs, or exaggerations of the truth (events are rarely “awful”.) |
| How do REBT therapists help clients understand how irrational beliefs cause maladaptive behavior? | ABCs: Beliefs become irrational when a given Adversity (or Activating thought or event) prompts an irrational Belief about that event. The Consequence is that the client responds with some behavior or emotion that is maladaptive. |
| How can the counselor help the client by using “Forceful Disputing?” | A client’s true problem may be her Belief about the Adversity. (“He stayed away because I’m unlovable.”) Therapists help clients Dispute (D) self-defeating beliefs in and out of therapy (homework assignments), leading to a new Emotional (E) consequence. |
| In what way do irrational beliefs manifest in maladaptive behaviors? | (PALID) The way irrational beliefs manifest is that clients engage in People Rating (and Overgeneralizing), Awfulizing, Low Frustration Tolerance, and Demands (unreasonable, on selves and others). |
| What is the goal of REBT? | The goal of REBT is to help client replace irrational thoughts, ideas and words with rational, healthy ones. |
| What techniques do REBT therapists use to help clients reach their goal of replacing irrational thoughts? | They use the ABCD model, verbal persuasion and education, challenging irrational beliefs, modeling, rational analysis, role playing, behavior rehearsal, problem solving, in vivo desensitization, and cognitive homework assignments. |
