basic natural features and their definitions

plateau a relatively level, high ground
isthmus narrow strip of land connecting 2 big bodies of land (has water on 2 sides)
cape a pointed piece of land that sticks out into a sea, ocean, lake, or river
delta low water land formed at the mouth of a river. formed by sand and silt that washed down the river.
basin a natural depression in earth's surface. typically filled with water
gulf a point of the ocean or sea that is partially surrounded by land
bay small gulf. ocean or sea partially surrounded by land
island piece of land fully surrounded by water
valley a low point between to mountains
plain a large area of flat land with very few trees
tributaries a river of stream flowing into a larger water source
desert a very dry area
sea a large body of SALTY water
peninsula a piece of land projecting out into a body of water
strait a narrow body of water that runs between two big bodies of water
