TermDefinition
Strategic self-presentation How we present ourselves to others so that they see us the way we see ourselves.
Status transactions A form of interpersonal communication through which people establish their relative degrees of social status and power. High: Calm, breathes slowly. Low: Jerky movements, diverting eye contact, stumbling with speech.
Behavioural confirmation Express self-presentation>other people react to us according to the context our behaviour has created > we see the way they respond to us > confirms our original belief (the kind of person we really are) Closed circle. (think depressed vs extroverted)
Mutual constitution The process of shaping and being shaped culturally. Culture and self as a collaboration: culture shapes self and self perpetuates culture.
What are the 2 possible modes of being within different cultural settings? 1.Independent 2.Interdependent
Independent US and Western Europe. Individuals think about themselves as responsible for behaviour and as in control. They control their worlds by influencing other people. Making choices defines the self as being unique and positive.
Interdependent East Asian. Attunement to others' needs. Transcendence beyond individual desires. Tendency to emphasize the well-being of others.
What 2 ways can you observe independent vs interdependent? Through differences in religions that focus on self-improvement vs supporting others (Ind: catholic, Inter: buddhist). How people talk about themselves (Ind: always positive attributes. Inter: more negative attributes for self-improvement)
Trios The speical pattern of capacities that characterize the ways of being of some African Americans based on their West-African cultural contexts.
What are the 5 capacities of trios (way of being of some African-Americans)? 1.Rhythm 2.Time (often focused on the present; our behaviour determines time) 3.Improvisation (express who I am and how I feel at any moment) 4.Orality (word-craft, preaching, storytelling, song, etc. relates to whythm and improv.) 5.Spirituality
