Mixtures & Solutions

5.5C/D-Mixtures & Solutions & More

TermDefinition
Mixture Two or more substances combined where they each keep their own properties and can be easily separated.
Dissolve To mix evenly and break down and spread out in a liquid.
Filter, Strainer, or Sieve Tool that is used to separate a mixture by trapping larger particles and allowing smaller particles to pass through.
Separate To sort into individual parts or substances.
Solution A mixture of one substance dissolved evenly in another substance, for example salt water or lemonade.
Evaporation ‐‐‐‐‐ can be used to separate the substances in some solutions because the liquid evaporates and the solid is left behind.
Solubility The ability of a solid to be dissolved in a liquid.
Physical Change Make different without changing what a material is made of such as breaking a glass, melting an ice cube, or mixing red and yellow marbles.
Ingredient One part of a mixture or solution.
Magnet Tool that can be used to separate mixtures containing substances that are magnetic.
Evaporation ‐‐‐‐‐ is the physical change in matter from a liquid to a gas.
Matter Stuff that everything is made of, anything that has mass and takes up space.
Relative Density Objects that are more dense than water will sink and objects that are less dense than water will float.
Insulator Material that slows down or stops electric current or thermal (heat) energy from passing through.
Conductor Material that allows electric current or thermal (heat) energy to pass through easily.
Solute The substance being dissolved
Opaque Not able to see through
Solvent The substance doing the dissolving
Iron, nickel, cobalt and steel Magnetic metals
Classify To put into groups
Dissolve Becomes so small you can no longer see it, but it is there.
Translucent Sort of see though like a stained glass window or wax paper
Transparent Totally see through
Insulators Examples: paper, carboard, Styrofoam
Solid Packed tightly together. Definite shape and volume
The number of molecules in matter that allows it to sink or float Density
Takes the shape of the container Liquid
When a solid changes to a liquid Melting
A force that pulls objects towards each other Gravity
Constant To remain the same
The best soil for planting Loam
Conclusion The end of your investigation
Disperse To spread out
The day-to-day conditions of our atmosphere Weather
2 or more items mixed together but you can separate easily Mixture
Condensation Clouds, fog, steam on a mirror
Coal Made from swampy plants
Oil and natural gas Made from dead plants and animals
Climate The weather pattern that develops in an area of many years or decades.
The process of water going back and forth from Earth to the atmosphere Water Cycle
Precipitation Rain, snow, sleet or hail
Evaporation Water changing from a liquid to a gas
Transpiration Plants release water vapor into the atmosphere

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
