| setting | the time and place of a story |
| character | a person, thing, or animal in a story, poem, book, play or movie |
| plot | the actions or events in a story, book, movie, or play |
| exposition | the opening information in a literary piece. It provides background information, establishes the setting, and introduces characters. |
| rising action | a series of events that leads up to the climax of the story. This is where problems start to arise. |
| falling action | a series of events that lead to the resolution of the conflict. |
| climax | the turning point of the story; the moment when the highest suspense reaches its peak. |
| conflict | the problem |
| resolution | resolving the conflict |
| summary | an account of the main ideas of a text |
| theme | the main idea or most important idea of a written selection |
| point of view | the way an author tells a story |
| first person point of view | the main character is telling the story |
| third person point of view | the narrator is telling the story |
| inference | a conclusion drawn from prior knowledge and evidence or clues |
| foreshadow | author gives clues as to what will happen next |
| Realistic Fiction | events in the story could happen in real life |
| Fantasy | events in the story could NOT happen in real life Ex.) Harry Potter |
| Historical Fiction | events of the past; characters are made up Ex.) I Survived Series |
| Science Fiction | could be real; only in the future Ex.) A Wrinkle in Time |
