English 9R Literary Terms
| Term | Definition |

| Characters | Individuals who take part in the action of the story. |
| Simile | A comparison of two unlike things, using the words “like” or “as” |
| Flashback | interruption of the chronological (time) order to present something from the past |
| Foreshadowing | important hints that an author provides to prepare the reader for what is to come and help the reader anticipate the outcome |
| Plot | Sequence of related events that make up the story |
| Theme | the message about life or human nature that is the “focus” in the story that the writer tells |
| Setting | the place and time frame in which a story takes place |
| Point of View | perspective from which the story is told |
| Conflict | a struggle between two opposing forces |
| Characterization | techniques a writer uses to create and develop a character |
| Personification | when an inanimate/nonliving object is given or described as exhibiting human qualities |
| Hyperbole | specific words and phrases that exaggerate and overemphasize the basic crux of the statement in order to produce a grander, more noticeable effect |
| Metaphor | comparison of two different objects that have commonalities; does not use “like” or “as” |
| Alliteration | the repetition of initial consonant sounds – used typically in poetry |
| Imagery | words or phrases that appeal to the readers five senses. In other words, the painting of a mental picture, using the senses. |
| Tone | the perspective or attitude that the author adopts with regards to a specific character, place or development |
| Mood | Words and descriptions that evoke certain feelings or vibes in readers. The attitude of the reader towards the subject that they are reading about |
| Repetition | when an author repeats the same words or phrases a few times in order to emphasize an ideas importance, or to make an idea more clear or memorable |
| Allusion | a reference to a well-known person, place, event, literary work, or work of art |
| Diction | word choice/tone created by the author |
| Figurative Language | language that has meaning beyond the literal meaning |
| Irony | a technique that involves surprising, interesting, or amusing contradictions or contrasts |
| Symbol | person, place, or thing that represents something beyond itself |
