| Properties | characteristics used to identify matter |
| Solid | a state of matter in which a substance has a definite shape and a definite volume |
| Liquid | a state of matter in which a substance has a definite volume but not a definite shape |
| Gas | a state of matter in which a substance has no definite shape nor a definite volume |
| Physical Change | a change in size, shape, or state of matter with no new matter being formed |
| Melting Point | the temperature at which a solid changes to a liquid |
| Boiling Point | the temperature at which a liquid changes to a gas |
| Freezing Point | the temperature at which a liquid changes to a solid |
| Melting | When a solid becomes a liquid |
| Condensation | when water vapor cools and changes back into a liquid |
| Evaporation | when liquid changes into a gas |
