Chapter 12 Vocabulary Terms

periodic Describes something that happens at regular intervals
periodic law The law that states that the repeating physical and chemical properties of elements change periodically (across a period) with the atomic numbers of the elements
period In chemistry, a horizontal row of elements in the Periodic Table
group A vertical column of elements in the Periodic Table; Elements in a group share chemical properties
alkali metal Family Name of the elements in group 1 of the Periodic Table; most reactive metals
alkaline-earth metal Family Name of the elements in group 2 of the Periodic Table; less reactive then the alkali metals
halogen Family Name of the elements in group 17 of the Periodic Table; combine with most metals to form salts
noble gas Family Name of the elements in group 18 of the Periodic Table; unreactive non-metals
