Text Features

TermDefinition
Illustrations/ Photographs Show readers exactly what something looks like
Captions Provide information about a photograph or illustration
Sidebar A text box that provides additional more in-depth information
Labels Tells the names of the parts of a diagram, photo or illustration
Glossary Provides definitions for the words in the text
Maps Helps the reader understand where a place is located
Table of Contents Notes the names of each chapter or section and gives page numbers
Heading Explains what each section of the text is aout
Special Print Words that are in bold print, italics or underlined to help readers know that the word is important
Text Features Elements of a text that are not the main body of the text. Authors use the text features to highlight important information,
Title Identifies what the text will be about
Graphics Charts, graphs or illustrations to help the reader understand the topic more deeply

ir- a prefix that means "not"
non- a prefix that means not
autograph the signature of a famous person
graffiti pictures or words painted or drawn
paragraph a part of a piece of writing that deals with one subject, begins on a new line and is made up of one or more sentences.
graphite a shiny, black substance that is used in pencils.
telegraph an outdated system of sending messages over long distances
irrational not thinking clearly
irregular not normal or usual
