QuestionAnswer
What is a double blind study? When neither the participants nor the researchers know which group anyone belongs to
Who are 'subjects' in a study? People or animals on whom an experiment is conducted.
What is a variable? The things that can vary
What is a hypothesis? A statement of the results expected to get
Define placebo "fake medicine"
What is the difference between the dependent and the independent variable? The independent variable is the variable that the researcher changes and the dependent variable changes as a result of what the independent variable does.
What is a control group? The group that does not participate in the critical part of the experiment.
naturalistic observation a research method that involves studying subjects without their being aware of being watched
sample a group that represents a larger group
survey a method of research using questions on feelings, opinions, or behavior patterns asked of a large group of people
psychological test observation and measurement of the subject using objective measures
interview a research method that involves studying people face to face and asking questions.
case study method research that collects info about a person's background
cross sectional method a method of research that looks at different age groups at the same time in order to understand changes that occur during the life span
longitudinal method a method of research that studies the same group of people over an extended period of time
field experiment research that takes place outside the laboratory
laboratory experiment advantages & disadvantages A=researchers can be completely objective D=may not reflect the "real world"
field experiment a&d A=setting is more realistic than a lab D=often difficult to control variables
survey method a&d A=can be amazingly accurate D=questions used may not be phrased objectively
naturalistic method a&d A=behavior studied is completely natural D=researcher cant interact with subjects and may interpret things wrong
