What are Opioid Agonists used for? Chronic pain, Acute pain, Decrease anxiety, Decrease diarrhea, Decrease cough.
What is the action of an Opioid? Attaches to mu, kappa receptors in brain & spinal cord decreasing pain response.
What are some Opioid Medications? MSO4 (Morphine), Meperidine (Demerol), Hydromorphone (Dilaudid), Oxycodone, Fentanyl, Oxycontin, Methadone.
How is Demerol givin? IV only.
How is Oxycodone givin? Combo pill w/ Tylenol, At home, and By mouth.
How is Fentanyl givin? Patch form, lasts 72 hrs.
True or false is Oxycotin a controlled release? True.
What is Methadone used for? Used for DETOX.
What are some adverse reactions of Opioid agonist Medications? *CONSTIPATION* * Decrease Respiratory Rate * Euphoria * N/V * Dizziness * Bradycardia
What are some nursing interventions for Opioid Agonist Medications? * Assess PAIN * Assess V/S * Re-assess pain w/ administration of meds * Do activity that causes pain 1-2 hrs w/ meds * Give stool softener- Assess CONSTIPATION * Rotate sites- no heat to patch * RR <10 = DANGER - hold meds
