What are Antihistamines used for? Seasonal allergies, Allergic reaction.
What are some Antihistamine drugs? Benadryl, Claritin, Allegra.
What are Decongestants used for? Decrease swelling in nose, Allergies, Sinusitis, and Cold.
What are some Decongestant drugs? Sudafed-PO; Afrin spray- Zero long term use.
What are antitussives used for? Dry cough.
What are some antitussive drugs? Delsym, Robitussium, Tessalon Pearls.
What do expectorants do? Reduce thickness of secretions.
What is the name of an expectorant drug? Robitussion- Liquid mucinex- pill.
What do Mucolytics do? They break down mucus.
What is the name of an Mucolytic drug? Robitussin- Liquid mucinex- pill; Mucomyst- inhailed.
What is the antidote for Acetaminophen Toxicity? Mucomyst.
What are the adverse reactions of Antihistamines? Drowsiness; Anticolinergic effects: Can't see, Can't pee, Can't spit, Can't shit.
What are the adverse reactions of Decongestants? Restlessness, Tachycardia, Insomnia, and Nasal dryness.
What are the adverse reactions of Antitussives? Sedation, CNS depression.
What are the adverse reactions of Expectorants/Mucolytics? N/V, Dizziness, Drowsiness.
Nursing Implications SAFETY! *No Alcohol *No Driving *Increase fluids- thins secretions, deep breathing, netipot/saline; call MD if cough >10 days. *Assess for HTN, Glaucoma, Urinary retention- Watch Antihistamine
