Ch.37 Anticoagulant

To prevent the formation of a clot.

Anticoagulant Used to prevent the formation of a clot and to prevent DVT in venous system.
What are anticoagulants used for? MI, Prevent thrombus, and AFIB.
Oral anticoagulant Coumadin and Warfarin.
IV anticoagulant Heparin
SQ anticoagulant Lovenox- Given after surgery.
Antiplatlet Prevents thrombus in arteries.
Antiplatlet Meds Aspirin and Plavix.
Thrombolytic Dissolves clots and re-opens vessel.
Adverse Reactions of anticoagulants BLEEDING- INTERNAL/EXTERNAL. N/V, Abd. cramping, diarrhea NO NSAIDS/Asprin NO Thrombolytic w/ Active bleeding
Nursing Interventions Assess for bleeding - Nose, gums, stool, and Hold pressure longer. Assess: PT/INR - Coumadin level / 2-3 on coumadin, >5 DANGEROUS, <1 INEFFECTIVE - Stroke out
Antidote for Coumadin? vit K+
Antidote for Heparin? Protamine Sulfate
