Terms and Definitions Ch. 17
| TERMS | DEFINITIONS |
|---|---|
| AFFERENT | The direction of neuronal impulse from the body toward the central nervous system. |
| AUTONOMIC | Self-controlling or involuntary. |
| AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM | Division of the nervous system that controls the involuntary body functions; consists of sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions. |
| AXON | The part of a nerve cell that conducts impulses away from a cell body. |
| BLOOD-BRAIN BARRIER | A barrier formed by special characteristics of capillaries to prevent certain chemicals from moving to the brain. |
| CELL BODY | The main part of a neuron from which axons and dendrites extend. |
| CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM | Brain and spinal cord. |
| CEREBROSPINAL FLUID | A fluid that fills the ventricles of the brain and also lies in the spaces of the brain or spinal cord and the arachnoid layer of the meninges. |
| CERVICAL | Neck region. |
| DENDRITE | The part of a neuron that branches out to bring impulses to the cell body. |
| EFFERENT | The conduction of electrical impulses away from the central nervous system to the body. |
| LUMBAR | The region of the back that includes the area between the ribs and the pelvis; the area around the waist. |
| MONOAMINE OXIDASE | An enzyme (includes MAO-A and MAO-B) found in the nerve terminals, the neurons, and liver cells; it inactivates chemicals such as tyramine, catecholamines, serotonin, and certain medications. |
| NERVE TERMINAL | The end portion of the neuron where nerve impulses cause chemicals to be released; these cross a small space, called a synaptic cleft, to carry the impulse to another neuron. |
| NEURON | The functional unit of the nervous where nervous system, which includes the cell body, dendrites, axon, and terminals. |
| PARASYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM | Division of the autonomic nervous system that functions during restful situations; "breed or feel" part of the autonomic nervous system. |
| PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM | The division of the nervous system outside the brain and spinal cord. |
| SOMATIC | The motor neurons that control voluntary actions of the skeletal muscles. |
| SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM | Divisions of the autonomic nervous system that functions during stressful situations; "fight or flight" part of the autonomic nervous system. |
| THORACIC | Relates to the thorax area or the chest. |
