some of the major components of design
| Term | Definition |

| Contrast | idea is to avoid similar elements on the page; clarifies the communication… make elements that are not the same very different |
| Repetition | repeat visual elements of the design throughout the piece; purpose is to add visual representation and unify |
| Alignment | : every visual element should have some connection to with another element on the page… purpose is to unify and organize |
| Proximity | things that go together are grouped closely together |
| Dominance | exercising influence or control of the elements on the page |
| Hierarchy | control the order in which the viewer/reader perceives the page… direct the reader using diminishing visual impact |
| Space | multiple definitions (white space, emptiness, negative space, trapped space, leftover space Activate space: add an object to the page and create context |
| Balance | all of the elements on the page flow so that there is some sort of balance |
