Design Principles

some of the major components of design

TermDefinition
Contrast idea is to avoid similar elements on the page; clarifies the communication… make elements that are not the same very different
Repetition repeat visual elements of the design throughout the piece; purpose is to add visual representation and unify
Alignment : every visual element should have some connection to with another element on the page… purpose is to unify and organize
Proximity things that go together are grouped closely together
Dominance exercising influence or control of the elements on the page
Hierarchy control the order in which the viewer/reader perceives the page… direct the reader using diminishing visual impact
Space multiple definitions (white space, emptiness, negative space, trapped space, leftover space Activate space: add an object to the page and create context
Balance all of the elements on the page flow so that there is some sort of balance
