Depressive Disorders

Abnormal Behavior (Depressive Disorders)

Depressive Disorders characterized by extremely sad mood and lack of energy that prevent the person from leading a normal life
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) intense depressed mood, reduced interest or pleasure in activities, loss of energy, and problems in making decisions (min 2 weeks)
MDD Emotional Symptoms sad, hopeless, discouraged, "down," and frequently isolated, rejected and unloved
MDD Physical Symptoms changes in eating, sleeping, lack of motor activity, lack of pleasure
MDD Cognitive Symptoms low self-esteem, pessimism, reduced motivation, generalization of negative attitudes, exaggeration of seriousness of problems, slow thought process
Depression with Seasonal Pattern/Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) subtype of depression that occurs with the seasons (typically winter)
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder depression before a period (women)
Learned Helplessness feeling of futility and passive resignation that results from inability to avoid repeated aversive events
Bipolar Disorder mood swings alternating between periods of major depression and mania (the tow poles of emotions)
Rapid Cycling short period of mania followed almost immediately by deep depression
