Abnormal Behavior (Depressive Disorders)
Term | Definition |

Depressive Disorders | characterized by extremely sad mood and lack of energy that prevent the person from leading a normal life |
Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) | intense depressed mood, reduced interest or pleasure in activities, loss of energy, and problems in making decisions (min 2 weeks) |
MDD Emotional Symptoms | sad, hopeless, discouraged, "down," and frequently isolated, rejected and unloved |
MDD Physical Symptoms | changes in eating, sleeping, lack of motor activity, lack of pleasure |
MDD Cognitive Symptoms | low self-esteem, pessimism, reduced motivation, generalization of negative attitudes, exaggeration of seriousness of problems, slow thought process |
Depression with Seasonal Pattern/Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) | subtype of depression that occurs with the seasons (typically winter) |
Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder | depression before a period (women) |
Learned Helplessness | feeling of futility and passive resignation that results from inability to avoid repeated aversive events |
Bipolar Disorder | mood swings alternating between periods of major depression and mania (the tow poles of emotions) |
Rapid Cycling | short period of mania followed almost immediately by deep depression |
