Temperature and Heat
Term | Definition |
---|---|
thermal energy | the total kinetic and potential energy of all the particles of an object |
energy | the ability to do work or cause change |
temperature | how hot or cold something is; a measure of the average energy of motion of the particles of a substance |
matter | anything that takes space |
kinetic energy | energy an object has due to its motion |
solid | a state of matter in which the particles are embedded together |
liquid | a state of matter in which the particles move freely |
gas | a state of matter in which the particles move randomly |
law of conservation of energy | this principle that states that energy is not created or destroyed, it can only transform |
insulator | 1. a material that does not heat well 2. a material that does not easily allow electric charges to flow |
energy transfer | a change from one form of energy to another |
heat | the transfer of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler object |
Celsius | the temperature scale on which water freezes at 0 degrees C and boils at 100 degrees C |
freezing point | the point at which a liquid transfers to a solid |
warm | a combination of both hot and cold |
convection | the transfer of thermal energy by the movement of a fluid |
conduction | 1. the transfer of thermal energy from one particle of matter to another 2. a method of charging an object by allowing electrons to flow from one object to another object through direct contact |
conductor | 1. a material that conducts heat well 2. a material that allows electric charges to flow |
boiling point | the point at which a liquid transfers into a gas |
melting point | the point at which a solid transfers into a liquid |
molecules | a neutral group of two or more atoms held together by covalent bonds |
cold | when something is at a low temperature |
absolute zero | the temperature at which no more energy can be removed from matter |
phase change | the point at which one state of matter transforms into another state of matter |
